Google cuts a deal with four states seeking to optimized search on their official Web sites.
Google Inc. and four U.S. states have partnered to improve the amount of data Google indexes from their Web sites and makes available to users of its search engine.
Google has provided free training and advise to webmasters from the states of California, Utah, Arizona and Virginia regarding topics like the creation of site maps and the use of Google's Custom Search Engine service, the company and the states will announce Monday.
Although the improved sites were well architected, their webmasters hadn't focused much on optimizing them for search engines like Google's, said J.L. Needham [cq], Google's manager of public sector content partnerships. "These people have search religion. Their site search tools are well designed, but they lack awareness of the site as a search engine target," Needham said.
Publishers of commercial Web sites are more aware of search engine optimization, because they generate revenue from online advertising and it's in their best interest to get good placement in search engine results. Not so with government Web sites, Needham said. Consequently, Google believes there are many public pages from government Web sites missing from its index and in general from the indexes of other search engines. This has led to the creation of a mini-industry around the online sale of public government information, data that instead should be easily and freely accessible via search engines and government sites, Needham said,
The four participating states generally chose to prioritize optimizing Web sites with information they consider to be particularly useful to end users, like information about education, jobs and health.
For example, Arizona's initial picks include sites with information about licensed child care centers and nursing homes, state jobs, licensed real estate agents and building contractors. "We're very impressed with the early results of this partnership. The citizens of our state will have access to more state government information that's more relevant to their daily lives," said Chris Cummiskey [cq], Arizona's chief information officer.
Cummiskey expects to add more state agencies to the effort, and that the knowledge will also trickle down to webmasters in counties and cities. "The cornerstone of this is increasing accessibility of Web information to the public and knocking down barriers that exist [between our sites] and the commercial search engines," Cummiskey said.
Along with Monday's announcement, Google will set up a site with information on how webmasters from the public sector can optimize their sites so that more information can be indexed by search engines. Google hopes more public sector webmasters will join this program.
A site map is a file that webmasters put on their sites to help the search engines' automated Web crawlers properly index Web pages. Google, Yahoo Inc. and Microsoft Corp. are backing a common protocol to provide a standard format for site maps. Google's Custom Search Engine lets publishers put a search box on their sites that only returns results from specific sites, as opposed to including results from Google's entire Web index.

China is one of the world's largest producers of counterfeit goods
China has criticised the US over its decision to file a formal complaint with the World Trade Organization over copyright piracy and counterfeiting.
The US says that China's failure to enforce copyright laws is costing software, music and book publishers billions of dollars in lost sales.
The US also argues that China makes it hard for legitimate firms to operate.
China "expressed great regret and strong dissatisfaction at the decision", the state news agency said.
Tighter enforcement
The Xinhua news agency quoted Intellectual Property Office commissioner Tian Lipu as saying that it was "not a sensible move for the US government to file such a complaint" at the World Trade Organization (WTO).
"By doing so, the US has ignored the Chinese government's immense efforts and great achievements in strengthening intellectual property rights protection and tightening enforcement of its copyright laws," the commissioner added.
Excessively high legal thresholds for launching criminal prosecutions offer a safe harbor for pirates and counterfeiters

On Monday, the US trade representative Susan Schwab said that piracy and counterfeiting levels in China remained unacceptably high.
The US said that despite China's promises to crackdown on fake software, DVDs, luxury goods, car parts and shoes, many of the goods were still widely available throughout the country.
China is one of the world's largest producers of counterfeit products, ranging from designer clothes, to pirated films and music, to luggage.
Many of the goods find their way into Europe and are knowingly bought as fakes by shoppers at markets and from street vendors. Firms claim that the poor quality copies dent their brand and divert profits and potenital clients.
'Criminal sanction'
The US has been threatening a WTO complaint against China since 2005.
It said on Tuesday that the two cases had been submitted to the WTO.
One case claims that Beijing's poor enforcement of copyright and trademark protections violates WTO rules. The other contends that illegal barriers to hamper sales of US films, music and books.
"Excessively high legal thresholds for launching criminal prosecutions offer a safe harbor for pirates and counterfeiters," the US said.
"Pirates and counterfeiters who structure their operations to fit below those thresholds face no possibility of criminal sanction."
A 60-day consultation period follows for negotiators to try to resolve the disagreements. Should this fail, then a WTO panel would rule on the case.

1.Clicking ads on your site.
This is the biggest of all the adsense mistakes and an easiest way to get your account banned.
2. Editing adsense codes.
You are not allowed to edit the adsense codes you obtain from your adsense account. It is also advised to make the color changes etc from the adsense account itself instead of editing it from the codes. This is to avoid the possibility of mistakes.
3.Placing more ad units than allowed on a page.
Only 3 ad units, 1 link unit, 2 search tabs, 4 different referral buttons are allowed on a single page. It should always be made sure that all your pages are within the allowed list.
4. Using other contextual PPC ads together with google ads.
You are not allowed to display other contextual ads on a page which is showing google ads. Google ads, YPN ads etc are examples of contextual ads. Amazon ads are examples of non contextual ads. However there is a debate on whether amazon's omakase is contextual or not.It has been informed by adsense support that Amazon ads can be displayed on the same page with google ads.
5. Labeling ads with texts other than "sponsored links" or "advertisements".
Only the above mentioned two labels are allowed for google ads. I have seen that some publishers uses labels like "sponsors" "links" "links of interest" "click here for more info" etc. I can assure that these are against adsense TOS and can get your account banned.
6.Disclosing your adsense reports data to public.
You are not allowed to disclose anything other than your aggregate earnings to others. I have seen many people copying data from their reports and pasting with their questions on different forums. Everyone must know that this isn't allowed at all.
7.Placing direct download links for music or video on your adsense site.
According to adsense TOS, no link on your site should directly lead to audio or video result.
8.Too many entirely different topics on a single site.
This mistake won't get you banned but this can make it difficult for you to get relevant ads.
9. Not updating your site often enough.
This also won't get you banned but will affect your earnings and traffic. A site which is updated regularly will be getting a lot of return traffic and the ads will be changing from time to time thus the chances of same ads appearing for too long and people becoming not interested in clicking on the ads is reduced.
10. Not blending ads with your pages.
To get a good click through you should make ads look like a part of your site and not as an alien from mars.
11. Setting up the payment hold for too long.
Adsense is very strict about click fraud and they can ban any account if they detects fraud clicks.Once you are banned they won't pay you the money you earned before you was banned. So it is not a good practice to set up a payment hold for too long a time interval.
12. Not checking your adsense reports at least once a day.
If you don't check your reports regularly you won't know when something suspicious happens on your account. If you are checking it regularly you can write to adsense support whenever you find something suspicious and it can save your account from getting banned.
13.Not reading adsense TOSandPPcarefully.

A Russian Soyuz rocket blasted off Saturday for the International Space Station (ISS) with an American billionaire aboard.
The rocket took off as planned from the space centre in Baikonur, Kazakhstan.
Hungarian-born space tourist Charles Simonyi, 58, made his fortune in software development and helped develop Microsoft Word. It is believed he paid 16 million euros (21 million dollars) for his eight day space trip. He is accompanied by two Russian cosmonauts.
The rocket is scheduled to dock with the ISS on Monday.

World of Warcraft has become hugely popular around the globe
World of Warcraft players are being targeted by hackers exploiting flaws in how Windows handles animated cursors.
The flaw came to light in late March and lets attackers take over vulnerable PCs via booby-trapped websites.
Warcraft players seem to be one of the targets because accounts for the game are potentially worth significant sums of money.
Microsoft has issued a patch for the flaw early to combat the rising number of attacks.
Player power
Security firms tracking how criminal hackers are exploiting the cursor flaw suspect there are many websites hosting the code that can be used to take over vulnerable PCs.
Some of the sites have been specially created but others have been hacked to be unwitting hosts for the infection.
The potential for the flaw to do harm grew significantly with the discovery of a website that automatically generates all the attack files needed to turn a site into a booby-trap.
A large number of criminally-minded hacking gangs are cashing in on the flaw.
One Chinese group known to be using the animated cursor flaw scored some success in February when it managed to hack a Superbowl website and use it to host code for spyware.

There is a ready market for card data on the net
Analysis of that malicious software showed that it lay dormant on a victims machine until they ran World of Warcraft (WoW) at which point it captured login data and sent it to the hacking group.
The group's enthusiastic use of the cursor flaw suggests it is trying to do the same again.
The online fantasy game now has more than eight million active players around the world.
Research by security firm Symantec suggests that the raw value of a WoW account is now higher than a credit card and its associated verification data.
One card can be sold for up to $6 (£3) suggests Symantec, but a WoW account will be worth at least $10. An account that has several high level characters associated with it could be worth far more as the gold and rare items can be sold for real cash.
In a bid to head off the growing threat from the animated cursor flaw, Microsoft took the unusual step of releasing a patch for the bug on 3 April.
Usually Microsoft issues security patches on the second Tuesday of every month. The patch for the cursor flaw arrived a week early and Microsoft has been preparing it since December when the bug was first reported.
Windows users can get the patch via automatic updates or visit Microsoft to download it manually.
On its security blog, Microsoft said the patch was released early "to help better protect customers from this threat".
The software giant urged Windows users to download and install the patch.
It said there was a chance that attacks via the vulnerability would increase but had seen little evidence of widespread use yet.
